Hairloom Spotlight: Fern Wong

Fern Wong and Reno Tan have been shortlisted in the Goldwell ColorZoom competition! Congratulations to the both of them. Now we’ll see if they get to represent Singapore in their respective categories. Finalists will get to go to LA to show off their handiwork! 

Fern is the cool, quiet person you see performing her tasks with a kind of focused concentration.

She has more than 10 years of coloring experience under her belt, and is a rare chemical technician in Singapore. Most salons don’t have the luxury of having someone as creative and dedicated as Fern is on their team, and we feel lucky to have her! Starting out in the industry in 2001, the first salon she worked at in Singapore was at Monsoon, where she met our creative director Calvin Gan. Fast-forward 7 years later, where she joined him to set up Hairloom and she’s been happily adding color to people’s lives ever since.

What inspired you to come up with your entry for Goldwell this year?

The theme this year is ‘Beautify’. I wanted to use a unique color, instead of the usual pinks and purples, so I chose yellow – a comfortable shade that’s not too bright, yet still unique, it’s a color you will see fewer people using or wearing on the streets.

How do you feel about your chances?

50 – 50 I guess, there are some really strong contenders in the Creative category!

What do you like about your job?

I love to beautify them, and the process of transformation, and to recommend colors that will suit their professions, personality and lifestyle. I am really great at blowing out hair too, I love to see customers’ hair looking smooth and amazing with a natural bounce.

Any goals for this year?

I actually want to learn to cut hair. All those years back I did learn it but I wanted to concentrate on being a chemical specialist. But now, I feel it’s time to develop this skill of mine to add more to my repertoire, and broaden my capabilities. I’m excited about it!
