Here are some trade ‘secrets’ that may be helpful for you to know:
1. You don’t have to wash your hair before you come in
That’s because we’ll always wash your hair before we do anything to it. Coming in with hair that’s been unwashed for a day or two gives the stylist a chance to see your hair in its natural state. In fact, leaving two days without washing your hair prior to coming in for a colouring session can actually be helpful.
2. You don’t need to buy matching shampoo and conditioner
It’s okay to mix and match to suit your hair needs. Just be sure to be consistent when it comes to certain ingredients. E.g. if you are using sulphate-free products, make sure both the conditioner and shampoo are sulphate free.
It’s fine to bring a picture, but it’s also good to be realistic
A picture is always helpful and is a great reference point for what you like – but sometimes, a look may not be achievable or will just not turn out the same way because of different hair texture, type, head and face shape. We will do our best to explain to you how we could possibly adapt a style to suit you, but it will most likely not look 100% like the picture you brought in!
4. It’s okay to tell us you don’t like your new hair
We will always do whatever we can to make sure your hair is done to your satisfaction, so if you don’t like the end result, please don’t hesitate to let us know! Don’t need to feel awkward or weird about it, we’re professionals and our aim is to make sure you’re happy with your hair.
5. A salon blow dry is always worth the money
A home blow-dry will never achieve the same effect, especially for the back of your head. You can definitely maximize your experience though, and here’s a post that shares some tips on how to get that great home blow-dry. But that professional finish can never be re-created at home. So if you want to look flawless for that special event or meeting, a salon blow-dry is irreplaceable.
Every salon experience should be relaxing and carefree – arming yourself with knowledge helps you to prepare yourself for your visit. Any other doubts or queries on your mind? Feel free to reach out or drop us a message on any of our social media channels!

Did you know that the follicle is the only living part of your hair? That’s the reason why you can only improve the condition of your hair, but you can’t really make it healthier as it’s already dead.
The scalp is the foundation for the hair follicle – taking care of it will impact your hair health significantly. If it is not in good condition, the chances of you experiencing problems with hair growth and health increase significantly. In fact, some research has shown that a flaky, itchy scalp can cause and/or worsen hair loss in certain individuals.
However, there are many ways to help your scalp. Here are some of them:
Begin with deep, effective cleansing
cleansing is for your scalp, while shampooing is for the strands. See your scalp as an extension of your face and skin. By keeping it in a good condition, healthy scalp will in turn lead to healthy-looking, gorgeous hair.
Cleanse at least every two days in order to remove oils, sweat, dirt, and environmental pollutants.
Washing your hair too infrequently may lead to an irritated scalp , causing more blocked pores and pimples. Use a gentle brush — the best are those with rounded, plastic prongs. Metal-pronged brushes can scratch the scalp and be quite damaging.
What you eat affects the health of your scalp.
Some foods can trigger dandruff flare-ups and make them worse; the most common are full-fat dairy products (especially cheese), spicy and sugary foods, as well as some alcoholic beverages. Eating more healthy proteins like fish and lean meat will be beneficial. If you are a vegan or vegetarian, you must be mindful of food combination, as well as quantity, to make sure you are intaking all essential amino acids and in great enough amounts.
Keep your stress levels in check.
Stress can also exacerbate flaking and itching. We often suggest yoga, pilates, and mindfulness to manage stress levels.
Consider scalp treatments to rescue damaged scalp.
Scalp treatments can rebalance the scalp and replenish moisture, banishing flakes for good. At Hairloom, our scalp treatments target the five common problems: hair loss, dandruff, an imbalance in the sebum level of the scalp (too dry/too oily), red or sensitive scalp and damaged hair.
We can’t overemphasize the importance of taking care of your scalp if you want beautiful, healthy hair. To find out more, make an appointment with us today, and we’ll customize a solution especially for you.

Did you just colour your hair? We want to help you make sure it lasts and looks its best for as long as possible.
For some, dyeing your hair could actually mean a lifestyle change; know that there might be an adjustment period as you get used to your new hair care routine. Getting used to it may take a couple of weeks, but once you see that your hair looks so beautiful, and your color still looking great even after several washes, you will feel motivated to keep it up.
Before colouring:
Prep your hair
Using a clarifying shampoo the day before your coloring appointment could be helpful. Clarying shampoos are applied directly to the scalp and will strip your hair of any oils that could block your color from penetrating the cuticle at a deeper level.
Get a trim
Trim off dead ends or hair that has already been over-processed, as these strands will not hold colour and will fade easily. In fact, if your hair has been chemically processed within the last 2 or 3 months or so, you may want to consider holding off on dyeing your hair to give it a rest.
Right after colouring:
1. Wash your hair only after 2-3 days
During the hair dyeing process, your cuticle layer is open, making it easy for colour to penetrate the hair shaft. Washing your hair too soon after may lead to colour loss, as the cuticle layer could still be open. It may take up to three days for the cuticle layer to fully close, so the longer you wait to wash your hair after you dye your hair, the more time your hair has to fully absorb the colour pigment.
2. Consider a dry shampoo
If you can’t stand the itchy/oily feeling from not washing your hair, you may want to try out a dry shampoo as an interim solution. A pro tip is to actually quickly blast the dry shampoo from your roots and scalp with a hairdryer at the end on the ‘cool’ setting, to get rid of excess powder. This will also help to give your hair some volume and to keep it from going flat.
For your day-to-day
1. Get the right shampoo and conditioner
Sulfate-free shampoos are your best friend. Sodium laureth sulfate, also known as sodium laureth ether sulfate, is a type of anionic detergent that is found in many personal care products. SLS is what creates the foaming effect that many people have learned to associate with soap and being ‘clean’. However, sulfates are harsh chemicals that also strip moisture, which can then lead to your hair dye fading easily. Use only sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners to keep your hair color from fading.
2. Use toning shampoo to revitalize your colour
Using a product like Color Butter can help to tone your colour periodically between salon visits. Shampoos that contain colour toners or dyes will slightly re-dye your hair each time you wash to keep it looking fresh until your roots grow out.
3. Use cool water to rinse out your hair
Hot water strips colour, because the heat causes hair cuticles to open, allowing the colour to wash out in the process. Using warm water to shampoo and then rinsing out with cold water will help to seal the hair cuticle, preventing colour loss.
4. Wash hair less often
Try washing your hair every other day or even 2-3 times a week to keep your color on lock. This may be tough in humid Singapore, but dry shampoo may help! Make sure to pick a color-safe dry shampoo.
When styling:

1. Use leave-in treatments to protect hair colour when styling
Colored and chemically treated hair needs extra hydration and protection from the sun to prevent damage and loss of nutrients to the hair. Leave-in treatments will help keep your hair smooth and hydrated, and it’s important to find one with UV protection so that the sun won’t fade your hair color.
2. Use heat protectant spray before using hot tools
Heat will strip away color and hydration and lead to damaged hair. To help prevent these problems from happening while using hot tools, try using a heat protectant spray before blow drying or styling. Heat protectant sprays will help reduce moisture loss from inside the hair, smooth the outside of the hair, and protect your hair from humidity after heat styling which, in all, will help maintain your color.
Finally, don’t go swimming in a swimming pool without wearing a swim cap! Chlorine will strip the colour and dry out your hair. Taking care of your hair will go a long way in keeping your colour looking fresh and vibrant.

Wondering if you should update your hairstyle for Chinese New Year? Or simply considering a new look in 2019? No matter what you decide, know that healthy hair is always on trend, year-round.
To achieve healthy hair, a combination of diet, lifestyle, and haircare practices work together to impact the texture and quality of your hair (on top of genetic factors, of course). Getting regular hair treatments is a vital component of good haircare practices. At Hairloom, we recommend hair treatments to customers based on the condition of their scalp, as well as hair type and textures. For example, some have oilier scalp (which can actually be a sign of dryness), while others have brittle or overly processed hair; different treatments target different areas.
Ideally, getting a hair treatment done every 1 to 3 months will help to maintain the strength and texture of your hair. It’s an investment that goes a long way because the health of your hair accentuates any style or colour that you want to pull off. Without smooth and shiny hair, a style can look a little lacklustre, and may not reflect the end result you desire.
Here are the treatments that we strongly recommend in 2019:
Intensive Hair Treatment
We recently upgraded our intensive hair treatment in late 2018. This 5-step treatment rebuilds hair from the inside out, infusing the hair shaft with 6 different forms of Keratin and nutrients.
This treatment is for you if: you have dry, damaged, brittle, or lacklustre hair. For many of us in Singapore, our weather is often a contributing factor to the state of our hair. For example, many people tend to chemically process or use heating tools on their hair in order to combat humidity-induced frizziness. This often damages the hair in the long-term. If you’re hoping to bring shine and smoothness back to your hair, this may be your best option.
Scalp Treatment
Who is it for? Anyone facing hair loss, dandruff, an imbalance in the sebum level of the scalp (too dry/too oily), red or sensitive skin and damaged hair; this is the one that we recommend highly. The fact is, a healthy scalp is essential for healthy hair, yet is often overlooked.
A relaxing and soothing process, it involves 100% painless peeling and scaling of the scalp, followed by shampooing and infusion of hair tonic with the help of a specialized machine. Definitely a very pleasant and spa-like experience. Specially sourced from Italy, the hair product – Exence (Revivre) – itself is completely free from pesticides, herbicides, insecticides and synthetic fertilizers, and is pure and organic, which is something that you don’t often find at most commercial salons!
Reconstructing Treatment
This treatment is for you if: you love to have fun with your hair – from crazy colours to perms, you want to try it all – but want to keep your hair strong and healthy at the same time. Marketed as ‘Insurance for Your Hair’, our Reconstructing Treatment uses the product Olaplex. Developed by scientists, it’s specially formulated to multiply hair bonds and cross-link broken bonds. As a chemical, it’s free of silicone or oils, and is perfectly safe for hair. By linking broken bonds in the hair during and after chemical services (perm, bleaching, colouring), Restructuring Treatment makes your hair even stronger than it was before.
Keratin Hair Treatment
Who is this for? For those with weak, easy-to-break hair. Keratin is a protein that naturally occurs in your hair and will thus be able to strengthen the hair shaft. This hair treatment seals more of the protein into your hair, tames frizziness and makes your hair more resilient in general. Keratin treatment has a long-lasting effect, which some may confuse with rebonding. Here’s a more in-depth explanation of the difference between the two.
03 Hair Treatment
Who is this for? This is the simplest treatment that locks in moisture for your hair, especially for those with colored hair. O3 – or ozone – treatment helps to form a layer of protective protein around your hair shaft. By oxidizing your hair shaft, it helps your hair become softer, smoother and minimizes frizziness. It will also not interfere with your hair color, and might even make your dye job last longer, as the protein helps to form a stronger bond between the dye and your hair.
