Meet Michael Chiew, 29, Leading Stylist

If you’ve been to Hairloom lately, you might have already spied his speedy and efficient presence. Michael has been with Hairloom since the beginning of June, and we’re happy to have him, as he brings with him a wealth of experience, and is a great fit for our salon’s focus on craft and creativity.

Quick, fastidious and alert, Michael is a perfectionist like the rest of the Hairloom team.

He tells us more about himself and how he could be the next person to create that perfect haircut for you.

How did you know you wanted to be a hair stylist?

“Growing up, I really enjoyed dressing up my friends and making them look good. We would spend hours in my room trying on clothes, and I would style them, and they would call me up to ask me for advice on what to wear and how to style their hair. As a teenager, I already knew a career in hairstyling would be the one for me.”

How did you start out?

“I took a beauty course in JB and learned my techniques there. Out of school, I became a hairstyling instructor for 5 years, and this was how I managed to build a firm foundation on hair styling. There’s no better way to learn something than to teach it! After 5 years, I felt like I needed to broaden my horizons so I came to Singapore and worked for various salons – the most recent being Passion hair salon for the past 2 years.”

What are you looking forward to bring to Hairloom?

“I feel that Hairloom is the perfect place to express my creativity, as it’s an edgy salon with bold and fashionable customers! I want to express my own sense of style here – I enjoy giving different cuts to my customers, because I don’t like to repeat the same look twice for them. I feel that it’s my strength – changing it up and giving my customers different looks each time they come. I love to transform them. ”

[superquote] “I hope to have that opportunity to surprise my customers with something they didn’t know would work for them – but ultimately does. That would be amazing.” [/superquote]

“I feel like I’m quite a rebel and enjoy unique things. Things that are too mass or pedestrian don’t interest me – I tend to want to go the opposite direction! That’s the spirit that I feel I bring to my craft, and I hope to have that opportunity to surprise my customers with something they didn’t know would work for them – but ultimately does. That would be amazing.”
